Josh couldn’t understand just why it wouldn’t start, another night was over and finally he had a week off and all he wanted was to head home to a nice warm apartment, some food and of course beer. Yet just like the night that felt like it had dragged on forever, now he had found something wasn’t quite right with the car he had driven to work in. His own was in the shop for a service and he had been given some Ford monstrosity. Maybe his idea that in the morning he could go home was a good one about an hour ago but unlike most end of shifts, Josh had finished up and decided to take off and actually leave the building instead of hanging around. His car had other ideas, and of course after a few attempts of kicking it he decided to actually take a look and find the problem himself.
Josh didn't mind taking a look at the car, after all it was a vehicle and he wasn’t going to use it until later that week to collect his own car so where was the harm in taking a look. Josh hated when things didnt work and of course the grand total of ten miles he had driven that night to aim to get home and he could feel something wasn’t quite right with the thing. Another mystery he thought as he popped the bonnet of the Ford, tossing his jacket casually over the open driver’s side door before sticking his nose into the engine area. At first glance everything appeared normal, no out of place wires, things connected in the right places and of course fuel in the tank. A killer if there ever was one but nope all the general boxes were checked.
Taking a closer look he rolled up his shirt sleeves deciding on a more hand’s on approach, taking the thing to pieces at the side of the road wasn’t an option as he could always hand it over to the paid mechanics to mess with but if he could fix it himself, at least he knew that it was his own work and trusted the standard. He was funny that way when it came to doing things himself, he never really trusted others with machinery, sure he’d happily trust his life to another agent but a car he drove or even his bike. There was no way he could let anyone else take a look or he would be inspecting the work they had done himself. Which was his ritual after his car was in the garage for anything.
He found himself checking the radiator hose nothing abnormal until his fingers came across a small cut in the line. Nothing that was too bad but he could feel the water dripping a little as he prodded it curiously. With that flagged as an area for concern he began to check a few other cables, pipes and wires for similar things and sure enough the fuel line was showing wear and tear from rubbing against some other obstruction in the engine. He couldn’t tell if it was deliberate or just bad luck on his part. Great he had been given a dud car just what he needed as the barely noticeable nick in the fuel line until the a few manipulations were done and a small amount of fuel began to seep from it and stink the surrounding area out. Leaning his hands against the side of the car he sighed. “Why does this crap happen to me?” He muttered to himself as he stared at the sky before wiping a little grease on his previously white shirt.
At least the stars were out he thought, though it was the only good thing about the area he was in. The docks after dark and a breakdown with a federal agent. If there was ever an ‘asking for trouble’ situation he just found it as he reached back into the car for his phone to call a tow truck as he grumbled.

Many roads to take Some to joy, some to heart-ache
Debra had been doing her usual routes to check on the docks and make sure that things were in place. She had several other agents with her and she never came alone but it was something she liked to oversee herself in case it didn’t get done. Sure PD was supposed to patrol the area but it was on her way from where she happened to be leaving from. She saw a figure bent over his hood and in the shadows she couldn’t make out the figure. Stepping out of the car she grabbed a flashlight.
Turning it on with the other agents following her out of the car she shined it in Josh’s direction but not towards his eyes. “Something wrong?” She questioned as she took a few steps forward. The agents who were with her didn’t like the fact she was simply out on the docks approaching someone bending over a random car. All kinds of things could be wrong, who is to say this wasn’t a trap for her. She took a few steps closer feeling like the face was familiar.
“Cameron?” She questioned with a bit of curiosity. What was he doing out here? She wanted to ask but she had a feeling this wasn’t the best place to be talking about it. It was also the reason she left his title out of his name. She settled some but remained on alert given their location. “Why don’t you come join us?” She pointed to the car. It was a little safer than the middle of the docks. Debra had a mother hen nature and that extended to those who worked for her in the office. Josh might have a different set of skills than she did, but that didn’t mean he was an exception.
She let him grab his phone to call the tow truck but still pointed to her car. She was soft and quiet spoken. Debra had been working so much lately that going home had been difficult, she was battling her own inner demons but just kept going when it came to things. She missed her family and so lately she had been overprotective of some of the agents as a result. She would wait until they got in the car to allude to anything more about asking him why he was here.

Josh kept his head down when he saw the flash light shine his way. It seemed like the asking for trouble location had just found him anyway as he moved his badge carefully to the inside of his trousers. No use in flashing that about if he didnt have to. He realised as he felt at his hip for the holster that was usually there he had stuck it in the glove box before setting off from the office. His was officially on leave and really a straight forward drive had just turned into a kind of nightmare as he kept quiet.
The voice was familiar though, he wasnt sure why because really who wanted to hang around in one of the worst areas to be after dark. “Yeah just a fault engine, shouldn’t be too long here.” He replied not wanting help or to be bothered. Mostly because you never knew why and he didnt need the headache of starting anything off duty that would lead to a million hours of paperwork and a set of agents going over his day. It was only when Josh heard his surname that he looked up and grinned seeing who it was.
“So it is the search and rescue party.” Josh said happy to at least see a familiar face and a whole other bunch of agents for a moment. He couldnt help but feel like he was being mothered though he didnt honestly know much about what that was like, he had a father hen though he guessed it was the same thing. Grabbing his phone and gun from the car Josh gladly nodded as he explained to the garage he needed a tow and where the keys would be. To be honestly he had been happy to get away for a week but seeing other agents he had never been happier for a night off.
“Lead on Boss.” Josh said as he out of habit more than anything stuck by her side, his hand hovering by his weapon as he kept his eyes open. “And thanks for the offer.” He said relived that he wasnt exactly stuck out there on his own. He might have been off duty but it didnt change the way he looked at the world and why the SSA was out there in the first place and not at home with her family.
Well that was something he wanted to ask, sure he didnt have a family to go home to and his girlfriend he hadn’t seen much of lately. In his head Josh had a reasonable excuse, he lived on his own and the worst that would happen was his house plant might be lonely. Still it didnt change the fact that protecting the boss was now high on his priority list as he kept his eyes wide open for any trouble.

Many roads to take Some to joy, some to heart-ache Debra just shook her head when he said it was a faulty engine. “No you won’t be here long. We will wait for the tow truck." Debra had to wonder. Though it was probably a good thing she and the other agents were sweeping the docks this time of night. She’d had to think that he could have been sitting bait for someone who was out to get him. “Your situational awareness could use some work.” She pointed out as she opened the car door before sliding across the seats.
Once she had ascertained that the car doors were shut and it was just agents in the car she looked right at Josh. “What on earth drags you down here on a night off?” She checked the area around them through the window and rested her head against the glass. Debra felt exhausted given the time of night that it was but she was also jacked up on caffeinated tea.
Debra really hated agents hovering around her but old habits died hard and she knew Josh was just trying to do his job. Though it didn’t keep her from commenting. “You aren’t on duty Cameron, let it rest.” She pointed at the agents around them. “They are on duty. Watching out for me is not in your job description.” No he had other things to worry about when he was on the clock, let alone off the clock.
There were a few reasons that Debra hadn’t been home. One of which was avoiding her father who was in town. She knew she shouldn’t be avoiding him but after her mother’s death… her dad had become more anal retentive and felt more of a need for control. Simon wasn’t always there to put a stop to Fred’s persistent phone calls or checking in on his daughters. Burying herself in work just seemed so much better.

Josh was relieved as he nodded to Debra. “Thanks, I appreciate it.” He said sure that she had better things to do than baby sit him and wait for a tow but he appreciated the help. Josh couldnt help but laugh when she questioned his situational awareness though really yeah he could have picked a better place to be that night. “You’re telling me but I didnt plan this, as much fun as it is to meet you and all. It wasnt part of my plan.” He explained grinning a little though really, he was glad she was there because if she wasnt. He wasnt sure he would be going back to work next week alive.
Once he was in the car Josh raised his brow at her, “Was just driving through, you know a way home.” He explained, “And my rental car stops. I take a look and it’s one of two options. It’s been tampered with or my garage has become useless overnight. Given where we’re sitting, I’m leaning towards tampered with.” Josh explained not wanting to sound paranoid but he wasnt exactly sitting outside the precinct with a lack of wheels. The worst place to be when you were a cop, agent or really anyone after dark and he had managed to find his way to it.
“Who was it that said once a fed always a fed.” Josh said though sure he wasnt officially on duty but he still had a duty of care toward his boss. On or off the clock it didnt matter after all she was doing him the favour. “And yeah but I don’t know them, I know you. All due respect gents.” Josh said not wanting to annoy any of the agents but still he could do his job no matter what. “Besides call it preventative hostage rescue. If you’re alright then I get to keep by holiday, if you’re not then I lose my days.” He joked grinning at her.
“So why are you out here tonight? Sting operation? Looking for someone special? Just doing the rounds?” Josh had any number of possibilities that could lead to why Debra was out there. Officially it was obvious given the team she was with it wasnt just a pleasure ride to see the sunny side of life. “But all due respect boss, you seem like you need to take a break. Caffeinated tea isn’t the answer, sleep and rest is.” Josh said sure of those two things, tired people were unreasonable, angry, and hair triggered which meant when they were armed it was a dangerous mix.

[attr="class","box1"]Thirty minutes later…
Emily wasn’t really certain why she heard someone coming in the house so late at night. She’d given Josh a key because coming to the door every time he came over was getting to be a chore. Pandora, her Great Pyrenese service dog went to the door to greet Josh and started putting her paw up to greet him. She was protective and awake later in the evening. Like Emily he was a bit of a night owl. Though Emily was awake most of the time this late because she was an artist and that’s usually whens he got wild ideas. Late nights were prime time.
By the time Pandora was done shedding fur all over Josh she headed back towards where Emily was. On her way out of the room towards the front door she was using the wall for support because she wanted to get up and stretch her legs. When she was around the house, that was a thing with her. She’d even installed handrails in the hallway to aid her in moving back and forth. Independence was a thing.
“Josh?” She looked at the clock. She sat a little confused because she’d sworn he was lived on the other side of town and he’d said he was going home. She came over wrapping her arms around his neck and balancing on her good leg. “Hi.” She stated finally. So she was in a better mood than usual, but she wasn’t a particularly vocal person in general. Though she was worried something might be wrong, given the time of night.

Josh had been unsure about being dropped off at Emily’s place, not because of anything other than he had said he was going home. He didnt want her to worry or think anything was wrong because technically it wasn’t. Still he knew he had her key on his key set as he let himself in not sure if she would be asleep or not. The Great Pyrenees Pandora met him at the door as he grinned, running his hand over her as he took her paw for a moment. He muttered a few best guard dog in the world comments to her as he didnt mind the shedding fur over him.
When Josh looked up from Pandora he saw Emily using the handrails to get around, she never failed to amaze him. She was still independent given all that had happened to her though as he glanced at his watch he figured it was a strange time for a house visit. “Emily.” He said grinning though he figured since she was awake it was pretty much a great idea to have been dropped off by Debra and the gang there.
Josh relaxed when he felt her arms around his neck as he wrapped his own arms around her. He held her a little in case she wanted to what weight she could on her other leg as he took a breath. It was good to be somewhere that wasnt the docks. “Hi and surprise.” He said noticing her better mood than usual. Josh eyed her curiously for a moment, “So what has you up at this time of night?” He asked her before realizing how strange it was that he was there when he said he was going home. “And is it okay if I can please stay here tonight?” He asked deciding that if she wanted her own space he could call a taxi though even just seeing her made his evening better.

[attr="class","box1"]Pandora was satisfied with being petted on the head and when she realized it was just Josh coming in the door she settled down some and was headed back to where Emily was when she appeared. The look on her face when she saw Josh was one that lit up with a smile. Pandora scampered off but stayed close by in case Emily needed anything but she at least got out from underfoot. “I’m jealous. That dog gets attention before I do.” She teased. Of course the dog got attention first, she had been the first one to the door.
Emily caught her boyfriend eyeing her. “I never sleep this time of night.” It was a generalized statement. “You just aren’t usually here so late.” She chided. If she had her way, she wouldn’t ever let him leave. So when he asked to stay? “You have a key, that means you are allowed to stay whenever you please.” She reminded him. Men were so dense. Josh however, he took the cake on this one or he was just being polite?
“Coffee?” She was the strange creature who thought that coffee solved anything at any point in time. Coffee was a comfort drink (like tea was to some) though she had yet to make a pot at this hour for the evening. Her eyes looked over Josh. “The question is better thrown on you. What are you doing here at this hour?” She lightly chided at him. Emily while she was in a great mood chided a lot and could get a bit snappy even when in the best of moods.

Josh grinned seeing Emily’s face light up, she was the most beautiful woman in the world and had a smile that shone like the sun. “Well you know, I only come here for Pandora, but I’m sorry to break it to you Pandora but your owner, she stole my heart the moment I met her. It’s only so Pandora doesn’t get jealous.” Josh said with a sigh as he grinned before shaking his head, “But since you’re here now, I think I can give you a lot more attention besides I thought you might be asleep by now.” Josh knew it was late it was why he had tried to be quiet in coming in but then the dog knew all and he was glad that Emily was awake.
Emily had a point, he hadn’t been at her place this late before though the thought of her never sleeping at that time of night. Nope he had no idea how she managed it, he had finished work and had planned on just falling into bed and closing his eyes to the world. “Oh well then since I have a key, I’m moving in for the night.” He joked though mainly that was about the truth of it since he had just crashed her evening. Josh was trying to be polite after all he wasnt sure if he was disturbing her or if she had plans of any kind though given the time of night, nope his mind was far too active.
“Sure coffee sounds great.” He said figuring that he might need help staying awake anyway if she wasnt sleeping. He didnt even know what time she usually went to sleep as he wondered what possessed her to have coffee right now. “You know why I’m here, to surprise you.” Josh said with a smirk as he held her, “I missed you all day today so figured I’d swing by and make sure you were alright.” Josh knew that keeping the truth from her might be a bad idea though he didnt want her to worry at all. Yeah he had missed her and right now just being there with her made everything better.
“And it might have been that my rental car broke down on the dogs, I had to call a tow, get rescued by the FBI and then driven over here because my boss was heading to this side of town anyway.” He said as he shrugged, “But mainly because I missed you... a lot. So question for you, why don’t you sleep at this time of night?”

[attr="class","box1"]Emily just chuckled at Josh. He was funny, she appreciated it. Emily never admitted to anyone, especially not Josh or her brother, that she appreciated it from time to time. As long as they let her be independent. “You gave her attention. She’s wrapped around your finger now.” Emily replied before hip shoving him but holding onto his hands as she did so to keep her balance. If Emily COULD do something she would. Though she would have to sit back down soon. Standing for long periods never worked out well for her. But she did like to get up to greet people. She was more mobile in the house out of her wheelchair than in it. But there were chairs for her in every room in case she needed them.
“Oh are you now?” Emily chastised playfully when he said he was moving in. “I think your girlfriend might have an issue with you moving into my place.” Emily loved to harass people, it was fun for her. She was just thankful that Josh could take it. Stealing a kiss from his lips she wiggled free from his grasp reaching for the handrail. Though his one hand was still on her back as he told her he missed her, she reached back and took his hand off her waist. “Hm?” Emily raised a brow. “You are hiding something Josh.” Though she got those words out before he mentioned the rental car.
“Now you come out with it. You could have called me.” She mentioned as she took slow steps towards the kitchen. Cue question about not sleeping. “Few years in the military being up all night will do that.” She had been night watch for as long as she could remember. Emily looked over her shoulder as she got to the kitchen taking a seat there for just a moment. That was her way with things. Little steps at a time but doing things herself. Pandora did things for her like opening doors and fetching things so she didn’t have to bend over and pick things up. Emily enjoyed her independence. Lord knows she had to fight to keep it.

Josh just grinned at Emily, “Well I was sorta hoping her owner would be too but if it’s worked on her then I just need to work more on the owner too.” He said grinning though he couldnt complain too much about the dog being wrapped around his finger. Josh laughed when she hip shoved him as he made sure to keep a hold on her simply to stop her from falling. He was all too keenly aware she valued her independence so he wasnt about to cross any of those lines.
“Yeah figured I would, you know.” Josh teased grinning, “Really you think she would? I thought she would love to be rid of me and besides I get to spend more time with you than my girlfriend so I think I can cope with that.” Emily harassing him was fun, he never thought he would have said that and sure to Emily he never would though it was all just good fun as he sighed when she wiggled free from his grasp. He could kiss her forever and not ever care to go back to work again though when she removed his hand from her waist he smiled.
“Me hiding something... never.” He said trying to at least appear innocent. “It could be Disneyland tickets?” He offered though he didnt have those on him, if Emily wanted to go he would make sure she did. “What and disturbed your waking sleeping mode, no I was taught better than that. Just break in and surprise them.” He joked though it wasnt breaking in if he had a key. “Well you need more sleep regardless and the military is fun like that. Late nights, early mornings, people yelling in your ear at three in the morning. Who needs sleep?” He joked though there were those days when he wanted to crash out of the military because a good night’s sleep was all he needed.
Josh watched Emily sit down, he knew all too well how she liked to do things herself but it was late and she needed rest. “I’ve got the coffee; you just sit there and try not to look so pretty at this time of night.” He said smiling as he reached to put the kettle on. “And don’t tell your boyfriend I was here either... he could get jealous.” He added as he put the kettle back on the stand as he crouched down. His hand went out to Pandora for a moment though he used Pandora as the excuse to be more on an eye level with Emily. “So how was your day so far?” He asked her genuinely interested.

[attr="class","box1"]Emily smirked, “she just might be.” There was a small pause in her words. “Just don’t tell anyone.” If it was one thing Emily was, it was tenacious and full of energy. Some days were better than others but she could joke around but she could also rip heads off with words and looks. “Well you are stuck with me now.” Emily replied in a matter of factly tone as she headed for the kitchen.
“My sleep patterns have been set for years. Try as you may, you will not break them.” Emily was very routine in her patterns of sleep. “I am getting enough rest.” Well what she considered enough and what he considered enough were probably not one in the same. Though that was a job for later. She just chuckled at his idea of Disneyland tickets. Okay so maybe Disney could be arranged but that wasn’t where her head was right now.
Why was he complimenting her? She never felt like she lived up to his compliments though she hardly said anything. Then he got down face level with her. “I slept a good bit of it, and i started working on some painting.” While he was face level she stole a kiss. “Let my boyfriend get jealous, you are all I need right now.” She stated with a smirk.

Josh laughed. “Your secrets safe with me.” He said glad that Emily was the way she was, tenacious and full of energy though most days he wasnt really sure how she did it to be honest. Then again the flip side was he knew she could rip heads off with a look so he tried to avoid that as much as possible. Not always but mainly if he could avoid that sort of look he was okay. “Stuck with you, I think I’m lucky to be stuck with you.” Josh replied as he followed her to the kitchen.
Had she just set him the challenge of a life time to break her sleeping patterns? Well he was game to try after all he could be determined if it gave her a whole night’s sleep. “Well we can try if you are up for that?” He asked her grinning, “I am sure there are lots of things that could be done to wear you out so you sleep.” He said as he raised his brown when she spoke of getting enough sleep. Josh’s idea of sleep was whenever he couldnt keep his eyes open anymore, sure he could still hear the military bell in a morning but generally he slept like a log most nights. Alcohol induced or not it depended on the day.
Complementing her was his way of things besides in his mind she deserved all of that and more. When he was level with her he smiled and nodded about her working on some painting though his mind soon wondered to her kiss as he grinned at her. “Oh he would be and all you need right now, what about tomorrow? Do I get traded in for the actual boyfriend?” He teased her as he kissed her cheek for a moment.
“Sleeping is good so long as you’re getting enough of it. So what paintings are you working on and can I see them?” He asked her grinning as he wondered what she was painting. Josh wasnt exactly an art enthusiast as some of the stuff bypassed him. He wasnt that expressive to understand what paintings meant with a single blotch on a page. If he could get it and understand it he was okay but even then, yeah he was a guy he liked pictures and things he could see.

[attr="class","box1"]Emily smiled. “All my secrets are safe with you.” Soon she was wrapped up and kissing him now that he was at eye level. She could only smile when he said he was lucky to be stuck with her. She turned about four shades of red. “Wear me out? Is that what you think it takes?” She got up from the seat and finished up with the coffee. Noticing her answering machine was blinking she hit it and let the tape run. So what, she had an answering machine for a landline. It worked for her, especially because getting to a cell phone ringing in the other room wasn’t always worth the trip. “My actual boyfriend is allowed around anytime.” She was still teasing him but moved to his lips as she heard the machine start to ramble off random advertisements. She smiled when he asked if she was getting enough sleep. “Yeah, I’m getting enough. And yes you can see the pain…” She was cut off when the next message started.
Don’t try and trace this call Emily, you’ll only find yourself. Find yourself swimming in your own blood before the end of the night if you do. Meet me in the park at midnight on Friday. Leave that FBI boyfriend of yours behind or he’s never gonna see you again. You have the key I want. Bring it to me and you will never hear from me again gorgeous.
Emily froze and turned pale, though confusion etched across her phase. “Maybe he meant someone else named Emily. I don’t have a key…” She wasn’t making much sense. It’s what Emily did when she worried, she just started talking. “There’s plenty of Emily’s who are dating people in the FBI right? I mean that had to be a wrong number.” She looked point blank at Josh. “Steven better not find out about that message. I’ll be in a convent by the end of the week or something.”
Well there went sleep. “I’ve been working on those paintings. I think you might like them.” Okay anything to ignore the message that had ended on her message machine. Emily leaned on Josh for support as much as she did the cabinet beside her. The coffee maker finished and she looked towards the sugar bowl. “Cream and Sugar?” Yes, because how many people asked about cream and sugar when their life was just threatened?

Josh could only smile at her when he was lost in her kisses. It was the best way to end the day and better still that she was awake. Even when he saw her turn those four shade of red he chuckled as he nodded. “Yeah could do, if you’re too tired to keep your eyes open then you sleep so it’s worth a try.” Josh explained watched her finish up with the coffee. Hearing the answering machine run he was glad that he hadn’t gone home to his own place. Listening to how he could have new windows or his boiler was about to break (which it wasnt) but he could get a new one.
Nope it was better being right where he was. “Oh he is, is he? Will have to watch out for that in case he comes in and finds me here instead.” He teased listening to her tell him how she was getting enough sleep. He doubted that but then not everyone was like him, he could touch his head to a pillow and be out for the night if the day had gone well enough. Then again depending on the day depended on his sleep so it was pretty much mutually exclusive in that sense. Josh was about to disagree with her on the sleep issue when he heard the voice.
Anything that started with a don’t try and trace this call, nope it wasnt a sales call as he listened closely. He hated the sound of it and worse still he hated what this person knew already. Seeing Emily turn pale turned his stomach as he shook his head. Josh just let her ramble and talk for a while as he tried to run through it in his own head. Her talking other people dating Emily’s in the FBI, no it didnt hold much water. Sure there had to be a few but then no he figured this message was meant for his Emily.
Paintings? Josh shook his head at her, no paintings he didnt care about at all right now just the fact that message was on her machine. Josh wrapped his arms around Emily the minute she leaned on him for support. “Forget the coffee Emily.” Josh said deciding that denial wasnt going to help anything right then. “Look at me, it doesn’t seem like a wrong number and you need to sit down.” Josh stated not wanting her to fall, yes he had a hold on her to stop that but he wanted her to be comfortable.
“I promise you nothings going to happen to you and you’re not going to any park.” He said firmly knowing he wasnt about to let Emily out of his sight for a minute now. His hand rubbed over her back lightly. “Now what key is this guy talking about? And why do you have it?” Josh asked thinking more of a door key than anything else. “What exactly have you been doing today?” He asked her knowing she said working on paintings but there had to be other things too.
